Plot summary
Starr Carter is sixteen. She lives in Garden Heights, the mostly black neighborhood where her father Maverick runs a grocery store, and she attends Williamson Prep, a mostly white private school, where she watches how she talks. Her childhood friend Khalil drives her home from a party after gunshots break it up. An officer stops them for failing to signal a lane change, orders Khalil out of the car, and shoots him when he reaches through the window for a hairbrush. Starr is the witness, and her family keeps what she saw from everyone outside it as the killing becomes a national story and protests spread.
