Plot summary
Nick Murder is an ironworker in early 1980s New York, married to Kitty, a seamstress, and father to three daughters. Kitty discovers a sexually explicit poem Nick wrote to his mistress, Tula, a much younger Mancunian who sells lingerie and first approached him after seeing him working shirtless. The discovery opens a rift that reaches the family and the neighborhood, and the characters' fears and fantasies surface as musical numbers. Nick's daughter Baby, who plays lead guitar in a local band, wants to marry Fryburg, a neighborhood boy, and Kitty forbids it. Kitty returns to church and the choir, and asks her cousin Bo to help her find Tula.
