Plot summary
Valerie Gail is a manicurist at the Curl Up & Dye salon in the San Fernando Valley, and her fiancé, Dr. Ted Gallagher, has little interest in her. Her friend Candy Pink gives her a makeover. Three furry aliens, Mac, Zeebo and Wiploc, have been traveling from planet Jhazalla without female company, and a broadcast of human women catches their attention. A fight between Zeebo and Wiploc sends their spaceship down into Valerie's swimming pool while she sunbathes. She invites them inside and calls her friend Woody to drain the pool so they can repair the ship.

- Madonna and Molly Ringwald were both offered the part of manicurist Valerie Gail and both said no, and Warner Bros. dropped the project once they had turned it down.
- Julien Temple was box-office poison after Absolute Beginners flopped, and other interested studios all wanted a different director. The French bank Credit Lyonnais finally paid for the film on condition that 4 million dollars came off the 14 million dollar budget.
- Temple's eye for detail slowed the shoot and producer Tony Garnett called the first cut a problem. More than five months of tinkering followed, losing scenes and the number "I Like 'em Big and Stupid", and by the time reshoots began the distributor had filed for bankruptcy.
- A stage musical of the film reached its first public staging days after the September 11 attacks in 2001. Reaction was positive, but neither that reading nor the later ones found the investors needed to mount a full production.
