Eartha Kitt
Biography
Born in North, South Carolina, Eartha Kitt was an American singer, actress, and songwriter who began her career with the Katherine Dunham Company in 1943. She became known for a distinctive singing style and for recordings such as C'est si bon and Santa Baby, both from 1953. On Broadway she appeared in Carib Song, New Faces of 1952, and Shinbone Alley, and her films included The Mark of the Hawk (1957) and Anna Lucasta (1958). She played Catwoman in the 1967 season of Batman. Kitt returned to Broadway in Timbuktu! in 1978 and The Wild Party in 2000, receiving Tony Award nominations for both. Later she voiced Yzma in The Emperor's New Groove (2000) and Kronk's New Groove (2005), winning Daytime Emmy Awards, and Vexus in My Life as a Teenage Robot. Her other screen credits included Ernest Scared Stupid (1991), Boomerang (1992), Harriet the Spy (1996), and Holes (2003). She died in 2008.
