Plot summary
A state official reviews the lineage that Hans's parents must document, approves the boy's name, and marks him as belonging to the state. Growing up, he hears familiar tales and ideals recast so that they glorify Adolf Hitler and Nazi ideology. An illness frightens his mother, who worries what the state will do if he does not recover. Back at school, the lessons teach obedience and strength and rule out compassion, and a show of sympathy during one class brings him punishment and pressure to accept what the regime wants him to believe.

- After Walt Disney spent four times his Fantasia budget on a film with low box office turnout, and with half his employees on strike and bankruptcy near, the studio's proximity to the aircraft manufacturer Lockheed helped it win a U.S. government contract for 32 propaganda shorts at $4,500 each, saving the company and keeping staff on payroll.
- The characters in the short speak German, and their dialogue is neither subtitled nor directly translated by Art Smith's lone English language narration; a voice track of Adolf Hitler in a full demagogic rant is used in a torchlight rally scene.
