Plot summary
Olive Penderghast, a seventeen-year-old at a high school in Ojai, California, feels invisible. Rather than spend a weekend camping with her friend Rhiannon Abernathy and Rhiannon's parents, she tells them she has a date with a college boy and stays home. When Rhiannon asks about it on Monday, Olive claims she slept with him. A classmate named Marianne Bryant, who leads a church group at the school, hears the exchange, and the story spreads fast. Marianne's group wants to rescue Olive from a reputation she invented. Olive confides in Brandon, a classmate who is bullied over his sexual orientation, and offers to act as his cover at a party so other students will take him for straight.
