Plot summary
Mia has no teeth, and Albert Scellinc, a hot-tempered man in middle age, is employed to care for her in a mid-century European apartment whose shutters never open. The girl does not go outside. Every day Albert fashions a new set of dentures for her out of ice, gathers the meltwater in an unusual device and freezes it again. The telephone rings from time to time, and the Master asks how Mia is doing. Albert remembers a country manor and his wife, Marie. Then a mysterious voice tells him the child must be readied for the world beyond the apartment, and he meets Céleste, a barmaid, and her friend Laurence.
