Biography

Alex Lawther is an English actor, writer, and director who made his professional stage debut as John Blakemore in David Hare's South Downs at Chichester Festival Theatre before the play moved to the West End. Born in Winchester and raised in Petersfield, he trained with the National Youth Theatre. His film breakthrough came as the young Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2014), earning him the London Film Critics' Circle young British performer award and a place among BAFTA's 2015 Breakthrough Brits. On screen he often plays outsiders and eccentric characters, including Kenny in the Black Mirror episode Shut Up and Dance and James in the Channel 4 series that won a Peabody Award. Other film credits include X+Y, Departure, Freak Show, Ghost Stories, The Translators, The Last Duel (2021), and Earwig (2021). He also appeared in The Jungle, The Tempest, and Hamlet, and directed For People in Trouble.
