Colleen Dewhurst
Biography
Colleen Dewhurst was a Canadian-American actress who built her reputation on the stage, born in Montreal and raised in the United States before she left college for New York to try acting. She became a leading interpreter of Eugene O'Neill, and won Tony Awards for All the Way Home in 1961 and for A Moon for the Misbegotten in 1974, playing Josie Hogan in the latter. For Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival she took on Katharina, Cleopatra, Lady Macbeth and Gertrude. Her films included The Cowboys (1972), McQ (1974) and Annie Hall (1977), and she was Marilla Cuthbert in the television versions Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987), work that brought her two Gemini Awards. On Murphy Brown she played Avery Brown and won two of her four Emmy Awards. From 1985 until her death in 1991, she headed the Actors' Equity Association as its national president.
