Plot summary
Elizabeth Cronin works as a court reporter in Minneapolis. Her husband Charles, from whom she is separated, wants to end the marriage and be with Annabella, a woman he met while they were apart. Thieves take her purse and car; she arrives late to work and is fired. Meeting Mickey Bunce, a childhood friend, brings back memories of Drop Dead Fred, the imaginary companion whose chaotic adventures once made her happy until she forgot him. After a talk with her friend Janie, Elizabeth moves back into her mother Polly's house; Polly blames her for Charles leaving and urges her to change her looks to win him back. Her old bedroom holds a jack-in-the-box sealed with tape. She pulls the tape off and Fred is inside. He offers to help her feel better, and she decides to let him.

- Tim Burton and Robin Williams were offered the director and Fred roles in the film, respectively, but both turned them down.
- Director de Jong cast his own mother as Grandma Bunce, who has yellow paint dumped on her in a scene; he said the crew thought it was cruel and that using her was cheaper than 10 therapy sessions.
- Director de Jong said he drew on being molested as a child by his older half-brother while rewriting the screenplay, and that the trauma of child abuse was never spoken about on set.
