Plot summary
Gunther Schmidt is an eccentric inventor in East Germany who keeps trying to cross the border with his homemade gadgets and keeps failing. He finally perfects a modified Trabant whose motor runs on turnip juice, but by then the two Germanys have reunited and the car is no longer an escape vehicle. No German manufacturer wants the design, so when the American tycoon John McReady invites him to an automobile festival in Los Angeles, Gunther goes to find a buyer. There he befriends Max, a hotel parking valet, and rehearses his presentation, which Vince, an associate of the car designer Mr. B, overhears.
