Plot summary
Toby Wong, a former agent from Hong Kong, has a cybernetic implant that gives him superhuman strength, speed and agility. Rather than let it pass to the Chinese government after the handover, he smuggles himself into San Francisco and plans to sell it to a Los Angeles company for $5 million. Mercenaries led by Vic Madison are after him, able to follow the implant's tracking signal. Toby ducks into a bar, where he runs into Malik Brody, a gregarious songwriter down on his luck. After Toby fights off his pursuers and wrecks the bar, the police arrive, mistake him for a criminal, and he takes Malik hostage, asking for a ride to Los Angeles.

- At the 1996 MIFED film market, Overseas Filmgroup blamed Steve Wang's director's cut for lower-than-expected returns and ordered a recut. The US DVD, VHS and cable versions are the "Robbie Little Cut", in which a producer removed 20 minutes, leaving 98, and replaced the original soundtrack with techno.
- Steve Wang wanted Drive to be a comedic action film, which he described as Jackie Chan by way of John Woo. Because the producers had no faith in his comedy, he presented the Scott Phillips script as a serious, straightforward action film instead.
- The frantic, chaotic shoot let Steve Wang, Mark Dacascos and Kadeem Hardison ad lib the film into the style they wanted. When Wang showed the producers the dailies, they loved what they saw and gave him more creative freedom and extensions to the budget.
- Masaya Kato was cast at the behest of Mark Dacascos, after the two actors had previously worked together on Crying Freeman.
