Biography

Lynda Baron, born in Urmston, Lancashire, spent her career as an English actress and singer, first studying dance at the Royal Academy of Dance and then appearing in repertory theater and West End venues. On television she became best known for the role of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel in Open All Hours, a BBC sitcom that ran for four series between 1976 and 1985, and she later returned to the part in Still Open All Hours. She played Auntie Mabel in the children's series Come Outside from 1993 to 1997, appeared as Linda Clarke in EastEnders, and was cast in Doctor Who three times. Her films included Hot Millions (1968), Hands of the Ripper (1971), Yentl (1983) and Colour Me Kubrick (2005). She was nominated for a 2011 British Academy Television Award for The Road to Coronation Street, and her stage credits included Follies and When We Are Married. She died in 2022.
