Plot summary
Geoff is an orphaned stable boy at a monastery, kept busy with menial chores and dreaming of becoming a knight. Twenty years earlier, the friars took charge of a dragon egg, hiding and teaching the creature, because a prophecy warns that when a two-tailed comet crosses the sky, a dragon's heart could doom mankind. Geoff tricks the grumpy monk Mansel into taking over his work and finds the hidden dragon, Drake; the two are frightened of each other and soon become friends. Meanwhile, the king raises Osric to chief adviser, and Osric begins bending the Old Code to his own ends. Master Kwan and his son arrive from Hebei asking about dragons, certain a new one has been born and that the comet comes in eight days.
