Plot summary
In Orange Springs, Florida, sixteen-year-old Genevieve 'Ginger' King lives with her wealthy family, where drinking a soda unchaperoned with a young man counts as scandalous. Wanting a more exciting life for her, her father packs her off to Mrs. Paddles' School for Young Ladies in Lake Placid, New York, kept in line by a strict disciplinarian. The pupils still find ways to flirt, and Richard Channing, an older man who rides past the seminary daily, fuels romantic daydreams among them. Ginger arranges a sleigh ride with him and tells him she is about twenty. When she slips out to a country club party he is giving, a schoolmate tells the headmistress.
