Plot summary
Fielding Marshall is a college kid who adopts a yellow lab puppy from the local pound after a girl turns him down, and he names the dog Gonker. The two are inseparable through his college years. After graduation his friends find jobs while Fielding has no idea what he wants to do, and his father, John, worries about him. Once he is settled at his parents' house, Gonker is found to have Addison's disease, which requires a monthly injection. His college friend Nate visits, and the two take Gonker out on a hiking trail. The dog runs off after a fox and does not return, and the pair search the trail without success. Ginny, Fielding's mother, sets up a search from the house, calling shelters, hospitals and newspapers, and the family has three weeks before Gonker's next shot.
