Plot summary
After a great war, Chicago is divided into five factions named for a virtue: Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the kind, Candor for the honest, Dauntless for the brave, and Erudite for the intelligent. Beatrice Prior lives in Abnegation, which holds the government. At sixteen, she takes an aptitude test and learns she fits Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, a rare result called Divergent. Tori, who administers the test, tells her to keep this secret. At the Choosing Ceremony, her brother Caleb selects Erudite, while Beatrice chooses Dauntless. She joins the initiates, among them Christina, Al, Will, and Peter, and hears Eric's warning that only the top ranks will remain; the rest become Factionless. Beatrice struggles through combat and shooting practice. Instructor Four gives her advice, and she works to hide what she is.

- Kate Winslet was five months pregnant while shooting Divergent, so the production concealed her bump with props. Director Neil Burger said she always had a file or case in her hand positioned to protect it.
- The fourth Divergent film, Ascendant, was canceled as a cinema release in favour of a television film and Starz series. Shailene Woodley refused to appear in the TV version because her contract required a theatrical release.
- Before Theo James was cast as Four, the filmmakers considered Lucas Till, Jack Reynor, Jeremy Irvine, Alex Pettyfer, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Ludwig and Luke Bracey for the role.
- For Divergent, the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel and its surroundings in Chicago were treated with dirt and rust so the area would look dystopian.
