Plot summary
Chicago's wall is sealed a second time, and the people who backed Jeanine are tried for plotting a coup. Johanna rejects this turn, and many who take the name Allegiant side with her. Tris and Four break Caleb out, and Tori, Christina and Peter cross the wall with them. Soldiers carrying advanced equipment pull the group from the wastelands and take them to a city shielded from sight, the base of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. David, the Bureau's head, says humanity once altered genes to solve its problems and the Purity Wars wrecked the world. In ruined cities kept apart, the Bureau has tested people to produce a naturally pure genome, and Tris is the first to reach that result. Caleb and Peter keep watch on Chicago from a distance while Christina and Four drill with Nita.
