Plot summary
John Halsey was a gifted mathematician at the company Eunice, until his mind gave way. He destroyed his research first, and he now sits in a nearby asylum, where the company believes he may only be pretending to be ill so his work stays out of its hands. Jim Reston, a high school friend of the neurosurgeon Rex Martin, arrives at Rex's office with a request. Rex studies the brain malfunctions that cause mental illness, and Reston wants him to reach Halsey's mind by surgery, either to recover what Halsey knows or to leave him unable to pass it on. Halsey believes a man called Conklin is watching him and means to kill him. Reston also tells Rex that the work in his laboratory is already paid for by Eunice.
