Plot summary
Carmen, a widowed Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles, is raising two children after a family accident. She is troubled by her teenage son's sexuality and wants to change it, and she leans on her religious faith. Bess, her daughter, is curious but sheltered; she hides from the world in her clothes and behavior, and others see her as odd. Andrea, her son, is drawn to a streetwise man. Each of the three copes with the accident in his or her own way, and each grows close to a new neighbor, Lucy Bell, who works as a companion for hire. The story is divided into three parts, one for Carmen, one for Bess and one for Andrea.
