Plot summary
Pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant has shark conservationist Misty Calhoun brought out to Akhelios, his facility at sea off South Africa. Neurobiology students Leslie and Daniel Kim travel there with her. On the base she meets Trent Slater and Mike Shutello, who train the sharks, and Aaron Ellroy, the computer technician. Durant puts on a demonstration: Aaron is thrown into the water among the animals, then driven clear of them by a device that sends the sharks away in formation. Durant explains that the brains of five bull sharks have been altered to raise their intelligence, which troubles Misty. In the wet lab he tells her why he asked her to come: the alpha shark, Bella, has been behaving oddly, and Misty concludes that the animal is pregnant.
