Plot summary

In New York City, janitor Daryll Deever tapes the commentary of television reporter Tony Sokolow each night to watch after work. A wealthy Vietnamese businessman, Mr. Long, whose connections are thought to be criminal, is strangled in the office building where Daryll works, and Daryll comes across the body. Mr. Long had fired another janitor, Aldo, after a quarrel. Aldo, a Vietnam veteran, and Daryll, who also served, both draw the attention of the police investigating the killing. Tony arrives to cover the murder and comes to believe Daryll knows something about it; he lets her think so because it keeps her close, and the two begin meeting regularly. The people tied to Mr. Long begin to think Daryll knows more than he is telling.
