Jon Finch

Biography

Jon Finch was an English actor of stage and film, known for Shakespearean roles. Born in Caterham, Surrey, he began in amateur theater and folk singing before working as an assistant stage manager in theater in the round and appearing in From the Hill on stage in 1963. Early television included Crossroads and Z-Cars, and he led the BBC science fiction series Counterstrike in 1969. He appeared in two Hammer productions, The Vampire Lovers (1970), and also The Horror of Frankenstein (1970), then had a small role in Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). Roman Polanski cast him as Macbeth in 1971, and Alfred Hitchcock chose him for Frenzy (1972). He later appeared in The Final Programme (1973), Richard II (1978) as Henry Bolingbroke, Death on the Nile (1978), Breaking Glass (1980) and Peter and Paul (1981) as Luke the Evangelist. He died in 2012.

A role that slipped away
Jon Finch turned down the part of James Bond in Live and Let Die, which came out in 1973, and Roger Moore got the role instead. Finch also said no to a part in Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers.
A change of course
After amateur theater and folk singing, Finch did his National Service in the Parachute Regiment, then stayed in the SAS Reserve Regiment, training several nights a week and on weekends. He resigned from the Army as acting commitments grew.
