Plot summary

In the village of St Mary Mead, Colonel Lucius Protheroe is a wealthy magistrate and churchwarden whom almost nobody likes. The Reverend Leonard Clement, the vicar, sees Protheroe's young wife embracing Lawrence Redding, an artist who keeps a studio in the vicarage grounds, and advises Redding to leave the village. The next day Protheroe is found shot at his writing desk in the vicarage study. His wife and Redding each confess to the killing, but Inspector Slack cannot make the confessions fit the evidence, and Miss Marple, an observant spinster who lives next door to the vicar, is asked for her help. Among the other villagers under suspicion are Protheroe's daughter Lettice, the curate Mr Hawes, whom Protheroe had accused over missing church money, and a newcomer, Mrs Lestrange.
