Plot summary
In Seattle, high school senior Light Turner comes across the Death Note, an ancient notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Its owner, the death god Ryuk, urges him to use it, so Light writes the name of a school bully and the boy dies in an accident. Light then targets Anthony Skomal, the man responsible for his mother's death; the next morning his father James, a police detective, tells him Skomal is dead. At school, Light proves the notebook's power to classmate Mia Sutton when an armed criminal dies during a live televised hostage crisis. The pair begin a relationship and set out to eliminate criminals and terrorists around the world, with Light taking the pseudonym Kira. A detective known only as L begins investigating Kira in Tokyo.
