Plot summary
Tatiana Mills is sixteen and lives with her single mother, Darlene, in suburban America, while Darlene carries on a complicated relationship with her married boss, Dr. Charles, a dentist. For a letter-writing exercise set by her social studies teacher, Mr. Spines, Tatiana becomes a pen pal to Anton Vincent, the notorious dictator of an island nation. When his own people rise against his violent and oppressive rule and depose him, Anton disappears, and Tatiana worries about him. Days later he turns up in the United States and hides in her family's garage, making himself useful around the house while working with loyalist forces back home on his restoration. He then takes an interest in her high school life, where popular girls bully her, and trains her to rise to power there.
