Plot summary

Centerville's police chief, Cliff Robertson, works alongside Officer Ronnie Peterson. They answer a complaint from the farmer Frank Miller, who says his chicken is gone and blames the hermit Bob. Bob fires a warning shot to drive the two officers off. The sky stays bright well after eight at night, the patrol car radio dies, and Ronnie's phone and watch quit. A radio report describes polar fracking, and pets and farm animals go missing. At the funeral home, the new undertaker Zelda Winston practices with a katana. Zoe, Jack and Zack, three young travelers, take a room at Danny Perkins's motel. Inmates Geronimo, Olivia and Stella hear on television that the fracking has shifted the earth's rotation. Cliff and Ronnie find two open graves.
