Plot summary
Jack Manfred is an aspiring writer in London, and money is short. He sells his car and, through his father's contacts in South Africa, becomes a croupier at the Golden Lion Casino. He trained for the work there before, and he is good at it. He dislikes the job but takes a certain pleasure in watching gamblers lose. His girlfriend Marion, a former police officer, dislikes it as well. The casino bans gambling, staff romances and any contact with punters outside work. Jack watches the floor as Jake, the croupier in his novel.
