Plot summary

An injury ends Koichi Takakura's career as a police profiler, so he takes a university lectureship in criminal psychology and settles with his wife Yasuko in a new neighborhood. Yasuko tries to introduce herself to two households: Mrs. Tanaka, who lives with her mother and rejects any friendship with the newcomers, and Masayuki Nishino, the man in the middle house, who acts strangely around her. Koichi's former colleague Nogami draws him into a cold case: three members of one family disappeared six years ago, and the only survivor, Saki Honda, recalls almost nothing of the days before it. Nishino mentions a wife and a daughter, Mio, and Mio tells Koichi that the man she lives with is a stranger, not her father.
