Plot summary
Fifty-four teenage girls in Tokyo jump in front of an oncoming train in a single mass suicide. Soon after, two nurses at a hospital leap from a window, and at both sites investigators recover rolls of human skin taken from the dead. Detectives Kuroda, Shibusawa, and Murata hear from a hacker, Kiyoko, about a website called Haikyo that marks each female victim with a red circle and each male with a white one. The deaths multiply across Japan. A man named Masa falls from a roof onto his girlfriend, Mitsuko, who is then questioned at the police station, where a search turns up the same butterfly tattoo found on the skin matching his back. A boy calls to warn of another mass suicide at the same platform; detectives mount a stake-out.
