Plot summary
Cal and Emily Weaver have been married for twenty-five years, and Emily, his high school sweetheart, now wants a divorce. She has had an affair with a co-worker, David Lindhagen, and tells Cal she still loves him, though not the man he has turned into. While she tries to explain in the car, he jumps out of it. Cal moves into his own apartment and spends his evenings at an upscale bar, talking about the split. There he meets Jacob Palmer, a young womanizer who offers to coach him in approaching women. Cal's thirteen-year-old son, Robbie, keeps making grand gestures toward his babysitter, Jessica Riley, the daughter of Cal's best friend Bernie.

- Dan Fogelman wrote the screenplay in 2009 with Steve Carell in mind, drawing on his own experiences with love among a group of people. After Fogelman sent the script to his manager, Carell read it within a week and came aboard the project.
- Before editing, the original cut of Crazy, Stupid, Love was three hours long, an assembly far longer than the version that reached cinemas.
