Plot summary
The nightclub Chocolate City is where Darnell Wright works as manager, and VIP access there is traded for favors from women. Ambitious and self-assured, he wants a share of the club, and he is about as devoted to the job as he is to the women he meets. Mia, his childhood sweetheart, is the woman he still has feelings for, and he has been seeing other women. When Brandi Web, a wealthy and enigmatic realtor, comes into the club, Darnell takes her as the ultimate challenge and pursues her. She turns down his first approach, and he keeps after her.

- Along with directing and starring, Lawrence co-wrote the screenplay with Kenny Buford, Bentley Kyle Evans and Kim Bass. The film grossed $34.8 million against a budget of $8 million and remains the only production Lawrence has ever directed.
- The plot was influenced by Boomerang and Fatal Attraction, and the opening sequence, with Darnell lying unconscious and fully clothed face down in a swimming pool while narrating the events that led him there, was influenced by Billy Wilder's 1950 film Sunset Boulevard.
