Fannie Flagg
Biography
Fannie Flagg is an American actress, comedian and author who started out writing comic material for a New York nightclub, Upstairs at the Downstairs, and drew the notice of Candid Camera creator Allen Funt, who hired her as a staff writer and later as a performer. She was a frequent panelist on Match Game, and she also appeared in the films Five Easy Pieces (1970), Stay Hungry (1976), Grease (1978) and Crazy in Alabama (1999). On television she was a regular on The New Dick Van Dyke Show and had a regular part in the early 1980s sitcom Harper Valley PTA. She co-wrote the screenplay for Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) from her 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, work that brought her an Academy Award nomination.

Early training
As a teenager, Flagg took part in the Miss Alabama pageant and received a scholarship that let her attend a local acting school for a year.
A first
Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe came out in 1987 and spent 36 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. Harper Lee and Eudora Welty both praised it.
Beyond film
Flagg recorded two comedy albums across the 1960s and 1970s, and the skits on them included many parodies of Martha Mitchell and Lady Bird Johnson.
