Plot summary
Anthony and Peter carjack Rick Cabot and his wife Jean, and Cabot worries the incident could cost him re-election with Black voters and with voters who want law and order. Searching for the stolen vehicle, Sergeant John Ryan pulls over Cameron Thayer, a television director, and his wife Christine, and searches Christine in front of her husband. Officer Tom Hansen tells Lieutenant Dixon about Ryan's conduct and asks for a transfer, which Dixon grants in exchange for silence. Detective Graham Waters investigates a homicide, and his mother asks him to track down his missing younger brother. Locksmith Daniel Ruiz changes the locks at the Cabot house, where Jean demands that they be changed again.

- Crash won the Best Picture Oscar at the 78th Academy Awards, upsetting the heavily favored Brokeback Mountain in what is considered one of the most notable upsets; presenter Jack Nicholson was caught on camera mouthing "whoa" in apparent surprise at the result.
- Paul Haggis was inspired to make Crash after he was carjacked by two African-American men at a Blockbuster Video on Wilshire Boulevard while driving home from the February 1991 premiere of The Silence of the Lambs.
- Production was delayed for a week when director Paul Haggis had a heart attack while filming a scene; he defied medical advice to hire a new director.
- Heath Ledger and John Cusack were attached to play Tom Hansen and John Ryan but dropped out after production delays; according to Yari, Ledger's departure reduced the film's international value and brought the budget down by $1 million.
