Plot summary
Joe is a transgender boy who enjoys the cowboy stories told by his father, Troy. His mother, Sally, favors traditional gender ideals for him, dressing him in pink and discouraging that interest. When Joe tells Troy he wants to live as a boy, Troy brings it to Sally, who refuses to accept it. Troy and Joe travel across the Montana wilderness toward Canada, and Sally wakes to find Joe gone. She reports it to the police and gives Detective Erickson a photograph of Joe with long hair in feminine clothing. Erickson calls Joe her daughter, and Sally agrees. After Troy's truck breaks down, the pair stay the night with Robert Spottedbird, Troy's drug-addiction rehabilitation counselor.
