Plot summary
An incident in Cordelia's past has left her troubled and damaged, and she is only beginning to recover. She works as an actor and is in rehearsal for a play, and she has come to stay in the basement flat of a London mansion house that belonged to her late father. Her twin sister Caroline lives there with her boyfriend Matt, and the two of them are about to leave town. Above them, a neighbor named Frank practices his cello, and the sound carries down through the ceiling. Once she is on her own in the flat, Cordelia begins a friendship with Frank. He is charming, though also strange and unreliable, and the friendship turns disturbing quickly.
