Plot summary
During the Hyborean Age, sorcerers of Acheron forge a mask out of dead kings' skulls, a weapon meant to subjugate the world, until the Cimmerians under Corin defeat them and scatter its pieces. A generation later, Corin's wife dies in battle after giving birth to their son Conan on the field. The boy grows up angry and impatient at his father's forge, learning that steel must be tempered before it can be used. Armored warriors bearing a two-headed serpent then descend on the village, led by Khalar Zym, who demands Corin's piece of the mask. Conan survives, and years on, as a grown mercenary, he hunts Zym, who is seeking the pureblood heir of Acheron's sorcerers to unlock the mask's power.

- Brett Ratner was prematurely announced as the director of Conan to The Hollywood Reporter by Lerner in November 2008, which displeased him: he pointed out that he was not doing Conan, that the announcement was totally premature, and that for now Conan was only a development deal.
- Momoa beat Kellan Lutz and Jared Padalecki to the role and, while still finalising negotiations, was enrolled in an intense six-week programme at a Los Angeles stunt and martial arts academy, aiming to add 10 pounds of muscle to his 215-pound frame with help from stunt performer David Leitch and Chad Stahelski.
- Warner Bros. spent seven years trying to get the project off the ground, with development attempts made by The Wachowskis, John Milius and Robert Rodriguez, who came closest to completing development but left for Grindhouse.
- Mickey Rourke entered negotiations for the part and offers were returned to him in February 2010 after a period of no talk, but he left the project a second time in apparent favour of Immortals, and Ron Perlman took on the character in March 2010.
