Plot summary
A scene at Melanie's wedding ends her relationship with her sister Kate, and the two do not speak for five years. Kate works as an editor at a publishing house, while Melanie lives alone in a large house. Their parents, Wendy and Al, have lost the family home to the bank and moved into a townhouse, where Wendy hosts a preschool. When the bank sells the house to Mike, a war veteran who has come to town to open a woodworking shop, Wendy's distress over it leads to a separation from Al. Kate decides to repair things with Melanie and to gather the family for Christmas, starting at the old house, where Mike finds her.
