Plot summary
Rosie Ming lives in Vancouver with her maternal grandparents, Gloria and Stephen, and writes poems that she gathers into a book and publishes herself. A poetry festival in Shiraz, Iran, invites her to take part. Gloria opposes the trip before agreeing to it, and she and Stephen pack a chador for Rosie. In Iran, Rosie finds other guests puzzled by her appearance, since she is not a devout Muslim and Iranian law does not require women to wear one. She sings one of her poems at a competition early in the festival and the judges score her poorly, because singing in public by a woman is seen there as provocative. Mehrnaz, the festival's cultural ambassador, stays supportive, while Dietmar, a German poet, is scornful of her style.
