Plot summary
Zak Gibbs wants a car, and his father, Dr. George Gibbs, is away at a science convention instead of taking him shopping. At Quantum Tech, an NSA-funded company, the Hypertime project is being shut down: Henry Gates, its chief executive, has one weekend left before the government collects the equipment. The lead scientist, Earl Dopler, has sent a prototype wristwatch to his former teacher, George Gibbs, hoping for a fix to a glitch. Zak's younger sister Kelly drops the watch into a box holding his belongings, and Zak puts it on. The world around him stops. He shows the device to Francesca, the new girl at school, and the two use it for pranks. Gates sends men to the Gibbs house to reclaim the prototype.

- Director Jonathan Frakes said the Clockstoppers script had been sitting unused at Paramount for years, and only got revived and rewritten because the studio's Star Trek films First Contact and Insurrection, which Frakes also directed, had done well.
- The effect of accelerated hero Zak appearing frozen in mid-air was built from three separate green-screen elements: actor Jesse Bradford leaping, Michael Biehn aiming his nitrogen gun, and a background plate combined with a computer-generated nitrogen stream.
