Plot summary
Robert Klingher is so clingy a boyfriend that he smothers Fern Petersen, a high school senior, and the two break up. Robert dies in an accident and returns as a ghost bent on winning her back. Fern tries to make something of the situation, but she has also started seeing Harlan, who plays football, and she doubts a living girl and a ghost can build a relationship. Robert lashes out with supernatural attacks on Fern and the people around her. For help she goes to her track coach, Valeria Kingsley, who also works as a ghost hunter, and Valeria hands her tools for dealing with a spirit, among them pills that let her see the dead.
