Plot summary
Lucy Toomey has worked for years at a top corporate law firm in New York and expects to be made partner after the New Year. Her older sister Alice, who has special needs, dies without warning. Lucy goes to Nilson's Bay, Wisconsin, for the funeral and to settle the estate. She dreads returning to her childhood home, and she feels sorrow over being too busy to take Alice's last call. In town she meets Peter Swinson, an old high school sweetheart who served as Alice's attorney. He explains that Alice's will requires Lucy to live in the family home for thirty days through the holidays to inherit it.
