Plot summary
Hal, who collects retro video games, installs a copy of CURS>R, an interactive fiction game from the 1980s, and objects around him begin to respond to it. Three months later, Kayla is a college student who works as a cleaner and brings old and new technology to Isaac, a computer enthusiast who teaches her to code. Her mother, Thea, became addicted to drugs after the death of Kayla's brother Ricky, and Lance, the rent collector, supplies her drugs and forces her into prostitution so she can keep the apartment. At Isaac's place Kayla comes across the game and a telephone number that advertises a $125,000 reward. A recorded voice from the Terror Director instructs her to finish the game and enter the code at the end. She agrees to split the prize with Isaac and starts playing.
