Plot summary
Ellie is an orphan, and Catherine, a social scientist, is the one who brings her to Marie Annette, a solitary socialite. Marie invites the girl to a holiday home because she wants to adopt her. Unbeknownst to Ellie and Marie, Catherine also asks Sophie Piero, a rebellious fighter for freedom, to move in, ostensibly as part of a family research program. That second invitation is meant to keep Marie's radicalized ideas of power and control away from the girl. Marie's thinking on power draws on the teachings of the philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli, and the story plays those teachings out among the people in the house.
