Plot summary
In Belle Époque Paris, Léa de Lonval is a wealthy retired courtesan who built her fortune on rich clients without ever falling in love. An older associate and former rival, Charlotte Peloux, asks her to take her 19-year-old son Fred, known as Chéri, off her hands. Léa means to keep him only briefly, but the affair runs six years: she pays his expenses, he wears her silk pajamas and pearls, and both insist it is casual. They are each other's only real friend. Then Léa learns that Charlotte has arranged a marriage for Chéri with Edmée, the innocent 18-year-old daughter of another courtesan, because Charlotte wants grandchildren. Chéri finds Edmée boring and does not wish to marry her, but Charlotte's fortune is his inheritance.
