Plot summary
Ten years after a global economic collapse, the Australian outback is lawless, and small military units patrol what order remains. A robbery goes wrong, and Archie, Caleb and Henry flee, leaving Henry's injured brother Rey behind. Their truck stuck in debris, Archie takes the car belonging to Eric, a lone drifter. Eric frees the truck and follows the men, asking around town for the car. There he finds Rey, who asks why he is driving his brother's truck.

- Joel Edgerton, who co-wrote The Rover's story with David Michôd, tried for the lead role of Eric before Guy Pearce was cast, but it did not work out; he and Michôd shot a scene together and agreed he was not right for it.
- Robert Pattinson won the role of Reynolds over other actors after auditioning; director David Michôd said he was not the "pretty boy" he had expected, and that once testing began Pattinson was his first choice by a long way.
- In its wide release across 608 theaters, The Rover earned $481,214 at an average of $791 a theater, taking from The Railway Man the record for the lowest opening weekend of a 2014 film playing in 600 or more theaters.
- David Michôd first chose The Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" for a crucial scene involving Robert Pattinson's Rey, then replaced it with Keri Hilson's "Pretty Girl Rock".
