Ed Devereaux

Biography

Ed Devereaux was an Australian performer and filmmaker who spent many years in Britain. Born in Sydney and a boy soprano before serving as a teenage soldier in the New Guinea campaign, he worked as a cab driver, storeman and truck driver until he moved to the UK in 1950. He became best known for playing Matt Hammond, the head ranger in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, and he also wrote and directed the 1969 episode The Veteran, which drew strong reviews. His film credits included the comedy Ladies Who Do (1963) and several Carry On movies, among them Carry On Jack (1964), plus They're a Weird Mob (1966), in which he played Joe. On television he was Mac in Absolutely Fabulous, Thomas Macaulay in The Onedin Line and Lord Beaverbrook in Edward & Mrs. Simpson, and he won an AACTA award for his portrayal of Ben Chifley in The True Believers (1988). He died in 2003.
