Big break
Vincent Ball wrote letters asking for auditions, and the Rank Organisation was so impressed it told him to come to England for a screen test for the 1949 film The Blue Lagoon.
First role
By the time Ball reached England, The Blue Lagoon was already in production, so he worked as Donald Houston's stand-in for an underwater fight with an octopus.
Early training
Before training in drama, Ball earned his living as a bricklayer. A scholarship then took him to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts to study acting.
