Plot summary
In Brooklyn Bridge Park, an argument between two eleven year old classmates ends with Zachary Cowan striking Ethan Longstreet with a stick, and Ethan is left with a tooth gone for good and the chance that a second one will go too. Ethan's parents hear what happened while they are asking him about his injuries. Penelope Longstreet, who counts human rights and justice among her priorities, decides to invite the other family over, and the Cowans come to the Longstreet apartment in Brooklyn so the business can be handled politely. Michael Longstreet works to keep things civil. Nancy Cowan arrives nervous and emotionally strained, and Alan Cowan keeps his cell phone close, taking business calls at the worst possible moments. Talk moves from the boys' fight to each couple's fitness as parents.

- Although Carnage is set in Brooklyn, New York, Roman Polanski shot the whole film in Paris because of his fugitive status, and the opening and closing scenes, ostensibly filmed in Brooklyn Bridge Park, were shot in France against a green screen.
- Production designer Dean Tavoularis made the Brooklyn apartment look authentically American by having numerous products and appliances shipped from the United States and renting American ironmongery for the doors.
- Roman Polanski cast his own son, Elvis, as the Cowans' son, a part seen only in long shots during the opening and closing scenes of the film.
- Carnage grossed only $2.5 million at the U.S. box office after twenty weeks in theaters, with another $27.5 million in foreign countries, for a worldwide gross of $30,035,601.
- Carnage was the last film Roman Polanski shot in the English language until he made The Palace, which followed in 2023.
