Plot summary
Mary Gilbert, once a journalist and a figure in society, arrives at the house that belonged to Elliot Graham's late father. Joe, the caretaker, invites her inside, and she begins to describe what the house once meant to her. Room by room, she recalls the parties of the 1950s, where aristocrats, industrialists, newspaper owners, editors, actors and directors gathered. Among the guests one evening was Greville White, a charming man who took her down to the cellar to choose wines for a salad he had made. There he told her of dark secrets involving establishment figures at the party above, among them child abuse, racism and sexual perversion. Mary turned him away, and he retaliated by using his influence with newspaper owners to keep her from working in Britain.
